The origin of the Temple of Sree Padmanabhaswamy is lost in antiquity. Thiruvananthapuram Zoo is one of the oldest of its kind in India. Swathi Thirunal Rama Varma, who ruled Travancore between 1830 and 1847, established it. The Thiruvananthapuram Zoo is home to 82 species from around the world.
A visit to the Napier Museum complex reveals a glimpse of Kerala's rich cultural heritage. An exceptional piece of architecture, the Museum is named after the former Madras Governor General, John Napier. The Napier Museum is also called the Government Art Museum. The Museum building is a combination of the Kerala, Mughal, Chinese and Italian architectural styles.
The Thiruvananthapuram Observatory stands on a hill, about 60 feet high, and 200 feet above the level of sea from which it is distant, in a straight line, about two miles. It commands an extensive and beautiful view of an undulating and finely variegated country towards north, the east, and the south-and of the sea horizon to the west. The eastern view is terminated by the Ghat Mountains.
The Observatory, now under the Physics Department of Kerala University, has got advanced reflecting telescopes among many others.
Opened in 1994 to the public, this is one of the most versatile planetariums in the country. The main GM-11 star field projector here can project almost all the constituents of the visible universe. It can also simulate the star-studded night sky over any location on the earth, on any day up to 12,500 years back or 12,500 years into the future.
Kovalam is an internationally renowned beach with three adjacent crescent beaches. It has been a favourite haunt of tourists, especially Europeans, since the 1930s. A massive rocky promontory on the beach has created a beautiful bay of calm waters ideal for sea bathing.
The leisure options at this beach are plenty and diverse. Sunbathing, swimming, herbal body toning massages, special cultural programmes and catamaran cruising are some of them. The tropical sun acts so fast that one can see the faint blush of coppery tan on the skin in a matter of minutes.
Located within a short driving distance of Thiruvananthapuram, Ponmudi is an enchanting hill resort with narrow winding pathways and cool, green environs. Along with a beautiful array of mountain flowers, exotic butterflies and small rivulets, Ponmudi offers excellent opportunities for trekking. With its tea estates and mist covered valleys Ponmudi is a fast developing hill resort with cottages and dormitory accommodation facilities.
Kanyakumari is the southernmost tip of peninsular India. Kanya kumari town is the southern tip of the Cardamom Hills, an extension of the Western Ghats range.. Kanyakumari was a town since Sangam period and is a popular tourist destination.
En route to Kanyakumari lies the 'Sucheendram Temple' built in the 17th century which is famous for its sculptures.
'Padmanabhapuram Palace' built by King Marthandavarma,one of the most ancient monuments in South India is also situated at Kanyakurmari District . Known for its strategic planning and military architecture, the palace was the seat of power for the Travancore emperors till 1790, when the capital was shifted to Thiruvananthapuram. Its main attraction is its sheer aesthetic beauty, innovative designs and time tested wooden carvings.
A repository of some of the rarest medicinal herbs, the Neyyar Dam located about 32 km from Thiruvananthapuram, is a popular picnic spot with a lake and a picturesque dam site. The lake formed by the dam across the Neyyar River is the bluest of blue, making boating irresistible for tourists.
The Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary of which the dam is a part is the habitat of over a hundred species of fauna including Asian Elephant, Tiger, Leopard, Slender Loris and reptiles like King Cobra, Travancore Tortoise, etc. A crocodile breeding centre and a lion safari park are also located in the dam site.
Aruvikkara Dam, located on the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram city, is a picturesque picnic spot located on the banks of the Karamana river. Near the Durga Temple here is a stream full of fish that fearlessly come close to the shore to be fed by the visitors. Boating facilities are available at the reservoir. The dam is the repository of potable water to Thiruvananthapuram City.
Jawaharlal Nehru Tropical Botanical Garden ideally located at the foot hills of the Western Ghats (at Palode, 40 km away from Thiruvananthapuram – Shencottah Road) in a 121 hectare forest land with hills and hillocks and evergreen, deciduous, marshy and riverine vegetation in addition to grasslands and rocky areas providing different microclimatic conditions for the profusion of the tropical species.
There is no ideal organization at present in India with such diverse habitats and vegetation to undertake research on plant diversity conservation and sustainable utilization of plant wealth. The institute is currently conserving more than 4000 species of flowering plants and about 300 species of non-flowering angiosperms, which is the highest number of plant species conserved among the botanic gardens in Asia.
Built by Sree Moolam Thirunal. it has been later used by the Travancore royal family to entertain its guests and serve non vegetarian food as the royal family was vegetarian. It is now protected by the tourism department the palace plays host to a lot of cultural meets and programs. The Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) has listed this place as a heritage monument. An all India Dance Festival (October to March) is organised by the Department of Tourism every year. During this period the classical Indian Dance performances are conducted every day. There are several tourists streaming from many foreign countries every year.
